Cheap Eats - Melbourne

Recently my friends and I headed out to the city and tried this little bistro tucked in the alleys of China Town. It is amazing what good food you can find on these small cosy little streets. The name of the bistro was Ants Bistro. You can't really miss it with a giant red ant painted on the side of their wall.
As you walk in you can get a feeling of East meets West with the decor. Along the wall are soft leather lounges and the various Chinese arts, and you can't miss the hanging lantern chandelier in the middle of the room. The staff were ok, so you can't really expect top service here, but the food that is what you go for.
A lot of the dishes you find are traditional Chinese dishes, and you can't go past their signature dish "Ants on a hill". Ants on a hill is a simple dish in which the peasant families of the past loved to make. The dish consists of mainly vermicelli, mushroom, some mince meat and lots of chili. In China a lot of people still lives in poverty and so the dishes they make reflect their living standards, and meat is a very expensive food item. So instead they use lots of inexpensive ingredients and add a little meat to make a dish that would fill their stomachs. The name doesn't really make you hungry, but the dish is pretty good nonetheless. So if you don't mind good food for a cheap price then give Ants Bistro a try.
Next time I'll post the recipe for "Ants on the hill"
Happy eating, happy living.
